In preparation for the holiday weekend, this week had plenty of fireworks. It started with tragic news from yet more flooding, and ended with another tragi-comic squabble between Gov. Andy Beshear and the General Assembly.
In between, there were investigations of opioid abatement dollars and rising utility rates, a spotlight on a new nonprofit newspaper, chicken farming, voter registration, domestic violence and more. The three people who died in weekend floods in Madison County have been identified.
According to the Madison County Coroner, John Powell, 57, drowned after his basement apartment flooded. Patricia Beck, 51, died at the same location. Garnett Isbell, 73, died after his car was swept off the highway on Page Creek Road in Richmond in a presumed drowning. A fourth person died in Jackson County.

Local governments in receipt of opioid settlement dollars are sitting on most of the money, according to a Tuesday analysis from The Kentucky Center for Economic Policy.
